Macartney is included in the team, with Gehrs as twelfth man. The South African team is: Sherwell, Schwarz, Strieker, Snooke, Sinclair, Peglcr, Faulkner, Pearse, Nourse, Llewellyn, Zulch. The weather cleared, and tie wicket rolled out fairly weli, though slightly soft. Sherwell won the toss, and sent Australia in. Kclleway and Macartney opened to the bowling of Llewellyn. His first ball was hit for two, but of the second Kelleway was saught by Snooke at fine slip. Hordern came next, and Faulknen bowled at the other end. The wicket was bumping, but rapidly improving. The batsmen played steadily by keeping up the wicket. Fifty runs were scored in 40 minutes, and the century, came up in 73 minutes. Macartney, as if to justify his inclusion, batted in his most brilliant style, and after he got his eye in, tourers were frequent Hordern also batted well. Sherwell made frequent changes is the bowling. At 30, Sinclair * got Hordern, who was out leg before. He had batted for 83 minutes, and hit fours fourß. Bardsley greeted Sinclair with a fourer, and the next ball gave three. After tea, the wicket was almost as good as ever. Macartney and Bardsley played excellent cricket, Bardsley mak« ing his fifty in 57 minutes, and Macartney a century in 152 minutes. This was his third century in succession, and was greeted with prolonged cheering. Pearse was tried, but his poor bowling met its due reward. Unlike previous occasions, he not take good wickets with his long hops and full pitchers. The South Africans' fielding, although improved, was not equal to the international standard, and the outfield had ft rare amount of Tunning. Sherwell has still a deal to learn in regard to placing his men. He attempted to cover too much ground, instead of concentrating for the most likely hits from the different bowling. Macartney's end came at 137. He stood in front to Schwarz. His was a chanceless innings. He batted for 193 minutes, hitting 16 fourers. Only five minutes Temained, and Hill sent Whitty in. Of the bowlers tried Schwarz and Sinclair were the best. AUSTRALIA.—First Innings.
