The Rev. J. Wilkinson is spending a few day 9 at Rotorua. The death is announced by cable of Lord Wolverhampton. Sir Joseph and Lady Ward left Chriatchureh on Saturday night for Wellington. Mr. William Aiken, of Wanganui, is leaving shortly for a tour round the world. A Sydney Press message states that Prince Leopold of TCattenberg has almost recovered his health. Dr. and Mrs. Bell will probably leave Sydney for London by the Orient steamer Orvieto, sailing on April 11. Mr. S .0. Stanton, late postmaster at Duncdin North, assumes charge of' the Stratford Post Office from this morning. Mr. C. E, Nicholas has retired on superannuation, and intends to take up church work in the Dannevirke district. The death is reported of Mr. Thomas Langman, of Huirangi, one of Taranaki'* pioneer residents, and a member of one of the very old and highly respected families who underwent all the trials and troubles of the early days of the settlement.
Police-Sergeant Oruiokshanks, of Napier, has been promoted to be a sub-in-spector, and Mill be stationed at Dunedin. He has had thirty-two years' continuous service and possesses an excellent record. He served in Dunedin for a number of years, became sergeant in 1900, and has since been stationed at Wellington, Dannevirke, and Napier. Land Transfer and Deed Department appointments are announced in the Gazette as follows: James J. L. Burke to be Assistant Land Registrar and Deputy Registrar of Deeds at Wellington; Edward S. Withers, Assistant Land Registrar at Auckland; Roger H. Bourke, second Assistant Land Registrar at Auckland; and Charles R. Kebble to be Deputy Registrar of Deeds at Auckland. The new bishop-elect of Auckland is * man who has won for himself a high and honored place among the clergy of the diocese of Melbourne, where he is now laboring, and is nlso well known throughout Australia as one of the leaders of thought and action in the Anglican Church. He is about fifty years of age. He received his university education at Trinity College, Dublin, wheTS the late Bishop of Auckland, Dr. Neligan, was also educated. He took Ms B.A. degree in the year 1883, and his M.A. degree five years later. In 1884 Mr. Crossley was ordained deacon in the diocese of Down, Connor and Dromore, and in the following year was admitted to the priesthood, After four years in Ireland lie crossed over to England, where he remained until 1905. In the interval he held several positions of importance, including lectureships at two theological colleges. Mr. Crossley left England for Australia in 1005, go'ing to the diocese of Melbourne and being appointed to All Saints', St. Kilda, a position which he has held ever since. He at once threw himself whole-heartedly into the work of the Church, and his special abilities as an organiser and leader were soon recognised by the Archbishop of Melbourne, who made him Archdeacon of ficelong. He has had special opportunities of gaining an extensive acquaint* ance with practical parish and educational work, and has an excellent reputation as a preached, a worker, and an organiser. He is also the possessor of.a warm-hearted and attractive personality. Ho is enthusiastic in all churck matters himself, and has the power of communicating his enthusiasm to others. He is described as a High Churchmsn, but by no means an extremist, and is said to be one of those men who can sympathise with and do justice to men of other schools of thought.
