NEWSPAPER PROPRIETORS

THE ANNUAL GATHERING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Queehstown, Friday. At the annual meeting of the Newspaper Proprietors' Association yesterday, the principal papers of the Dominion were represented. Mr. P. Selig (chairman), in a lengthy address, reviewed tk« work for the past twelve months, and it was unanimously decided that the address be printed and circulated among members. A heavy agenda paper was disposed of. It was decided to write to the Premier respecting journalists writing from England on the coronation and Imperial Conference. An interesting discussion was evoked by a letter from Dr. Alexander, of Ashburn Hall, urging the non-publication of cases of suicide. A number of letters on the subject were also read from the leading editors of New Zealand, who were practically unanimous that news could not be suppressed, and the meeting endorsed this opinion. Mr. Selig was unanimously re-elected chairman. EMPIRE PRESS UNION. Queenstown, Friday. The first meeting of the New Zealand branch of the Empire Press Union was held to-day. Mr. Fenwick, acting-chair-man, explained that it was the outcome of the Imperial Press Conference of 1909, and the' membership already compared favorably with that in other places. Mr. Fenwick was elected chairman, and the committee chosen was Messrs. Brett, Horton, Blundell, Selig, Weston, and the Hon. G. Jones. Resolutions were passed expressing gratification at the establishment of the union, and the desire of the branch to assist the council in- its efforts to promote the welfare of newspapers throughout the Empire, also urging a reduction in the' subscription. The meeting considered a broader membership was more likely to be secured at a lower rate, say two guineas.
