A .cablegram from Rome states that the Pope is confined to his bed with influenza. llesba Stretton, the novelist, writer of many religious and philanthropic stories, is dead.—London cable. Mr. C. A. Wake, proprietor of the New Zealand Shipping Gazette, is at present on a visit to Mew Plymouth. At Eltham on Wednesday Miss Minnie Tuyler, eldest daughter of Mr. G. W. Tayler, was married to Mr. Ernest Dive. Mr. G. E. Blanchard has been appointed to represent the St. Aubyn Town Board on the advisory board for the Technical School. The death of Captain C. Sinclair is reported by cable from Melbourne. He was for many years master of dilferent Union Company's boats, and afterwards the company's building superintendent in Scotland; then superintendent for Australia. The Anglican Synod of the diocese of Wellington will meet on March 8 for the election of a bishop in succession to Bishop Wallis, who has resigned owing to failing health. The Auckland Synod will also meet on February 21 to select a bishop instead of the Rev. T. P. Mead, who was offered the position, but declined it.
