Mr. Quiulaii, the Speaker of the Wcstraliau Assembly, intends to retire trouj public life. The Kev. H. G. Roshcr, M.A.,' vicar of Lilleshell, in Shropshire, England, hag been appointed to the cure of Paliuerston district. A New York cablegram states that Dr. Ryan, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Philadelphia, a widely-known prelate, is dying. Mr. 0. Carter has been appointed to represent the Taranaki County Council on the Advisory committee of the New Plymouth Technical School.

Canon C. H. Ivens, Sowerby Uridge, England, ha* withdrawn his acceptance of the charge of St. Mary's, New Ply. mouth. It will be necessary to make another appointment. The Rev. H. E. Lewin, vicar of Adelong, New South Wales, is on a holiday visit to Xew Plymouth. Some years ago Mr. Lewin worked as a student in the Ingle wood and Okato parishes. A Dunedin telegram states that Mr. Lomas, at present chief clerk of the Labor Department, has been appointed to succeed Mr. Tregear as Secretary of tie Labor Department. Mr. F. Rowley will become chief clerk. Mr. C. Nicholls, of Inglewood, who has been transferred to Wellington, was the recipient, prior to his departure, of a presentation from the members of the Gymnasium Club, for which he had acted as instructor for some time. Mr". A. C. Thynne Ms been promoted to accountant in the Hawera branch of the Bank of Australasia, vice Mr. Heame transferred. Mr. A. Paul, of the Manaia office, is to join the Hawera staff, and Mr. A. Collingwood. who has been at Hawera for some months, is transferring to Manaia.

Inspector Mitchell, of Invercargill, will succeed Inspector O'Brien (retired) at Dunedin. Sub-Inspector O'Donovan, of Palmerston North, replaces Inspector Mitchell with the rank of inspector, and Sub-Inspector Phair, of Dunedin, takes the place of Sub-Inspector Qreen (retired) at Timaru. The London Observer, contradicting the rumor of malignant throat trouble, says that Mr. Lloyd George addressed open-air meetings in Scotland when his chest was wrapped in cotton-wool and he ought to have been in bed; for which he is now paying the price.. His friend* hope he will shortly be able to attend the House of Commons. Recent changes in the Catholic clergy include the transference of the Rev. Father Goggan from Napier to Boulcotfc street, Wellington. The Rev. Fa.ther McDonnell, now at Napier, taKes charge of that parish. The Rev. Father Golden, of Feilding, has resigned, owing to illhealth. His place will be taken by the Rev. Father OTJwyer, now relieving at Stratford. The Rev. Father Kineaid, a new arrival from Home, will go with him as assistant. The Rev. Father Daly, assistant at Feilding, has been appointed" to the charge of the newly-formed Upper Hutt parish.. The Rev. Fathers Harnett, Cronin, and Dore, all new arrivals, are to go to Masterton, Westport, and PaK merston respectively. Mr. Francis Cornwall, who has been a leader in New Plymouth musical circles, for some years past, has decided to leaveNew Plymouth for Auckland, and wilt probably take his departure aoout Wednesday next. Mr. Cornwall was responsible for the musical success of the opera '•Dorothy," produced here recently, and,. as conductor for some years of "St. Joseph's choir and later of the Choral Society and the Operatic Society, has donegood service for the musical side of our population. Many will remember, too, his connection with the very popular Manflolin, Banjo and Guitar Club, in which the Cornwalls were always prominent. Mr. Cornwall will be entertained by his musical friends before leaving. The Ven. Archdeacon Harper, viear of Timaru, now in England, has written to> the vestry resigning his position from 31st December next. He is returning to Timaru about the end of May, and the vestry will hold over consideration of the resignation till his return. The Archdeacon is now in his 78th year. Archdeacon Harper is the son of the late Bishop Harper, Primate of New Zealand, and was educated at Eton, and Merton College, Oxford. He arrived in New Zealand in 1850, and has been in charge of several parishes since, He was made a canon in 18(50, and Archdeacon of Wcstland in the same year, of Timaru and Wcstland 1875, insumbent of St. Mary's, Timaru, 1875; commissary-gen-eral of Bishop, 1805; lion, chaplain of the South Canterbury Rifle Battalion, 1897. He holds the volunteer decoration.
