MOUNT EGMONT METAL
LOCAL BODIES' PROTEST. At the meeting of the Taranaki County Council yesterday, the following letter which had been sent to the Prime Minister by the l'atea County Council was read;—
"1 have the honor by direction of the Council to call your urgent attention to the fa'ct that the expressed inability of the Government to supply metal from .Mount Egniont this season is causing severe loss and inconvenience to local •bodies in this district, and more especially as our Council (and no doubt other bodies) was led to suppose that the metal could be supplied. Our Council had made arrangements to lay down 10,000 yards, the greater part of which was to metal an important road in the northern part of the county which is urgently ill need of same. I understand that somo £15,000 was set apart for the work of extending the railway so many months ago, and my Council was certainly under the impression that the making of the railway to the main reef was contemplated by the Government to be effected without delay, whereas it now appears that after all this delay and wrong impression no work of any importance has been undertaken, much to the disappointment of the whole district. I am therefore directed to ask you to us.e your influence to the utmost in pushing forward the line, so that we may be assured of obtaing necessary supplies early. I shall feel grateful if you will advise me definitely as to the intention of the Government, and feel assured that now that llie urgency has been brought prominently before you, you will recognise its very great importance."
li was resolved, on the motion of Crs. •Stevens anil Hopson, that application be made to the Hon. Minister for Public "Works, urging the necessity of the early completion of the Mount Egmont line.
