Received 8, 5.5 p.m. St. Petersburg, January 7. ■ As a result of the earthquake, clefts three feet wide appeared in the ground at Vyerniji, urkestan. Many demented people are searching for relatives. There was not a single house but what was damaged. Seven hundred families are homeless, sheltering in schools and barracks. Many, fearing a. repetition of the shocks, pass the nights in the open air. The weather is intensely cold. The ground in the vicinity of Vyerniji in some places rose, and in others subsided. Huge boulders lying in the glaciers on snowflelds were hurled out of position. Many persons were buried in land slides, and the roads to Prjevalsk are impassable owing to the changes in the configuration of the country and fissures. A later report states that two hundred perished. The shocks continue. It is impossible yet to estimate the number of earthquake victims.
