Sandc r. PROPOSED DEVIATION. I Mr. <:. T. Hurray, resident road engineer, wrote tliat he considered a portion of the balance of grant for the current year might he expended on the gully near Mr. Cole's, but recommend 'that the present line he carefully tried and exact comparative estimates "of construction 'of the present and proposed lines be obtained before the deviation is decided upon, as compensations, cost of survey, and legalisation have all to he borne by die Council.—Keceived. PUKEARUIIE. Surfaceman A. R. 'Davis (Pukearuhe) stated in his report that their road was i» fair order, with the exception of YVaiiti Hill, which had been cut away by stock, and in some places the road hail become so narrow that carriers were complaining of it as unsafe to carry a full load. He asked for authority" to put on a man for five days.—The Council decided to terminate by one month's notice the arrangement existing between Mr. Davis ami t'lie Council with regard to the maintenance of (he Pukearuhe road. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. The chairman reported, under date January 5, that he had made enquiry at the Survey Ollice, New I'lvmouth, and was informed that the piece of land near ...e upper-bridge on the Okoke road was road reserve; he then-fore wrote Cr. Julian to arrange for the sale of at least three acres of the bush thereon. Makara Bridge.—The paint had perished, and the structure required scraping and either painting or tarring. A. Corkill's Royalty.— The arbitrators being unable to agree, he had referred the matter to the umpire for his decision. Okau ,Road.—ln company with Cr. O'Sullivaii, an inspection of this road] as far as the junction with the Kiwi] was ma-!.-. The road was in a neglected condiu :, the water-tables being blocked along ].-, whole length. These should be attended to. a point taken off at outplace, and the balance of money available expended on sandstoning in some of the bad places Tikorangi Crushing—The work was completed, but the quantities broken had not yet been ascertained. Tenders.—Tenders for the supply of metal at rjrenui and formation at Tikorangi had been called for. The proposals for expenditure of the grants on Mimi, Mokau and Okoke roads had been sent to the Public Works Department for approval. ' Tii-. matter of accepting tenders for Okoke road and burning papa was left in ih.- lands of the chairman and Cr. Julian. It was resolved that Mr. Schmidt be authorised to employ three men for one month to open water-tables on Okau road, and that he be also authorised to expend up to £!lfl in sandstoning and taking oil' bad point, as arranged. ENGINEER'S REPORT. Mr. C. T. Dowsett reported for the month of December as follows:—Up to the 31st the work of Piripi's metalling and concreting at Okoke was only half finished, and he was strongly of opinion that the contractor had earned a penalty. On the Matiro road plans and quantities have been prepared for one contract. On the Otaraoa road surveys have been prepared" and estimates made for either a deviation or cutting and idling on old line; to cut down and fill up as shown on plan on old road would cost £105; the cost of deviation, earthwork, fencing land, etc., would be £Bl. Most of the timber for the Piko bridge is cut, and will be ready for inspection shortly. On the Xgatoto road full instructions have been given for the rebuilding of the broken culvert; and plans are ( in progress and will shortly be completed for submission to Mr. Murray for erection of low level bridge over the Mangaonata creek. Both these items are under Government grant. Should the Council decide to paint the Makara bridge, ho would recommend using "Fcrrodor" paint. Resolved that the engineer bo instructed to notify Piripi that, if the contract is not finished bv the end of the current month the penalty conditions would be ' enforced. Resolved that the plans for the expenditure of the money on Otaraoa con- '■ tract be submitted to the resident road engineer for approval, with strong expression of opinion from the Council ' that the adoption of (hat providing for ' a deviation would be most preferable in ' the public interest. ' GENERAL. \ It was resolved that Mr. Whitakor, contractor, be given notice that if the i work in connection with the Black ( bridge. O'Donnell, i sen., wrote with reference to the prob- f ability of an appointment as surfaceman on the Okau road.—The Council are not } considering the appointment of a perma- t nent man on the road.
