SEAMEN'S WAGES
PROVISIONAL AGREEMENT ARRIVED AT. By Cable—Press Association—CopjtKghi Received 30, 9.40 p.m. Melbourne, December 30. As the result of the conference between the Registrar of the Federal Arbitration Court and representatives of the Steamship Owners' Federation and the Federated Seamen's Unions, a provisional agreement was reached for continuing work until. an award of the Court or a new and final agreement between the owners and the seamen could be obtained. The two parties agreed to recommend the acceptance of the provisional agreement, which operates from January 1, to their respective organisations. It is understood that the agreement provides for a compromise, both as regards the rates of pay and conditions.
SOME OF THE ALTERATIONS. Received 31, 12.55 a.m. Melbourne, December 30. Both the Shipowners' Federation and the Federated Seamen have notified the President of the Arbitration Court that they are agreeable to accept the provisional agreement, which grants an allround increase of ten shillings a month in wages, and fixes the overtime rate at Is Gd instead of Is and Is 3d previously ruling. It also concedes preference to unionists. The seamen asked for £1 a month increase. A conference will be held to endorse the provisional as the new fixed agreement. »
