Mr. W. R. Tuck denies that a sculling match between Webb and Pearce has been arranged. I O'Donovan Rossa, the well-known Irish patriot, who has been ill for some time in America, is reported to be in a critical condition. Sir Robert Stout's name appears as the author of a book on "The Dominion of New Zealand," to be published by the I "Cambridge University Press." Lord Plunket paid a visit to the New Zealand pavilion, at the Anglo-Japanese Exhibition recently, and expressed himself as "very pleased with New Zealand's excellent exhibit." One of the oldest white residents of New Zealand died at Opua the other day, in the person of Mrs. Dinah Poole. She was born at Russell eighty years ago, her father, Mr. T. Hansen, having arrived there in 1815. M. Lelievre, Deputy-Consul for France at Auckland, was seized with a stroke of paralysis on board a ferry steamer last Saturday afternoon. He was removed to his home and medically attended to. He is now much better. Dr. Percival, acting medical officer of the Porirua MentarHospital, has been appointed surgeon on the Union Company's steamship Maitai, in the New Zea-land-San Francisco service. He joins the vessel on November 15. Pending, the arrival of Mr. R. N. Adams from Hinds (Christchurch) to take up the duties in the Okato district for the Presbyterian Church, the Rev. H. Braddock will stay on to conduct services for the next two Sundays. Mr. Adams is to j be here the week after next. I
It is stated that Mr. W. H. Hawkins lias announced his intention of contesting the Pahiatua seat at the next elecion. Mr. E. McFarlane, the manager of the Ballance Co-operative Dairy Company, is also mentioned as a probable candidate in the Opposition interest. Dr. Emil Krause, who is proceeding to Samoa for the purpose of relieving Dr. Schultz, the Chief Justice there, and Mr. D. Byrne, the London correspondent of the Melbourne Age, were passengers by the R.M.S. Marama, which reached Brisbane from Vancouver on Saturday, states a Press Association cable. Mr. William Henry, founder of the Royal Life-saving Society, is expected to arrive in Auckland on Sunday next, and will probably be given a civic reception. Mr. Henry will examine the pupils at present under instruction in Auckland, and subsequently the successful candidates will give a display of life-saving, etc., in the dock.
