BOWLING

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. There was a large attendance of members and visitors and their lady friends at the opening of the New Plymouth Club's season yesterday afternoon. 'Theweather was perfect for outdoor games, and the green was in splendid order. Eight rinks—a full green—were just enough to accommodate the players, who one and all voted the opening most successful and enjoyable. At a break in the play, the president (Mr. G. Grey), in declaring the green open for the season, made a brief speech. He referred to the alterations that had been made in the green since last year, which, when completed, would allow of nine rinks playing simultaneously. Twenty-five years ago the green had been started by half-a-dozen members, but to-day they had to be limited to 110. On behalf of the Club he thanked Mr. Cock for the use of flags for decorations, and also the ladies for providing afternoon teas. It was a great pleasure to him to see so many members of other clubs present, and also so many visitors, whom they would always be glad to see when play was going on. A pleasing duty he had to perform was the presentation of a life-membership ticket to Mr. W. Morey, who had uone so much for the Ciub. (This was accepted by Mr. J. C. Morey on behalf of his father, who was unable to be present.) Mr. Grey said that the West End Club would hold their opening ceremony on the 17th inst., and tliey would be pleased to see as many present as could pay them a visit. The president made special mention of the presence of Mr. Percival, president of the Bowling Association, who had come from Inqlewood. In concluding a capital speech, Mi. Grey expressed the hope that members would have a happy and successful year. (Loud applause.) Mrs. Grey, wife of the president, then "threw" the jack, and the green was officially opened. Play proceeded merrily all the afternoon, lea and toothsome edibles being served to all and sundry. The following were the playeTs and the scores in the annual match between teams selected by the president and vice-president:— P. V.P.. Wilson, Binnie, Anderson, Burgess 37 Medley, Tisch, Spencer, A. Goldwater 20 Marks, Chaney, C. Rundle, S. Run-

die 23 Rawlings, Bellringer, Jenkinson, A. K. Smart 23 Messenger, Goodacre, J. Avery, Bishop 31 Jackson, Lewis, Hooper, Penn 15 Cutfield, Hobbs, Firth, Govett.... 28 W. Rundle, Sole, Strachan, South. 15 Waugh, L. Goldwater, Harle, H. Smart 14 Mannix, Luscombe, D. K. Mor-

It is interesting to note, at the completion of the silver jubilee of the New Plymouth Club, that there have been seven presidents and seven secretaries during? that period. They were as follows:—Presidents: 1885-8. Mr. James Paul; 1889-91, Mr. O. Samuel; 1891-2, Mr. James Paul; 1892-3, Mr. J. C. George; 1593-4, Mr. D. Teed; lsl>4-6. Mr. \V. L. Xewman; 1896-1900. Mr. R. Cock; 1900-7, Mr. James Paul; 1907-9, Mr. R. Cock; 1909-10, Mr. G. Grey. Of these gentlemen two have joined the great majority, viz., Messrs. James Paul and J. C. George. The secretaries during the same period were: Mr. W. T. Downes, 1885-9; Mr. James Paul, 1889-91, 1892-3 and 1894-5; Mr. T. A. Murphy, 1801-2; Mr. Ab. Goldwater, 1893-5; Mr. J. C. G.eorge, 1896-7; Mr. P. W. Hall, 1897-1906; Mr. W. N. Ewing, 1906-1910. The life-membership ticket presented to Mr. W. Morey by the Xew Plymouth Club is a very neat piece of work by a fellow member, Mr. A. M. Bradbury. As such it will be more highly prized as a memento of the green than anything in the style of the ordinary lithoI graph card.

Congratulations to Caretaker Aldridge, of the New Plymouth Club, on the excellent state of the green for the opening ceremony! (Continued on page 8).
