STRATFORD DAY BY DAY.

(From our Special Corresnondeut). Stratford, Last Night. *Mr. C. D. Sole, chairman of the Stratford School Committee, has received a letter from the High Commissioner, in which he states that the flag presented by Strat.ford-on-Patea to the school at Stratford-on-Avon was hoisted on 23rd April. Owing- to illness, tire Hon. W. Hall-Jones was unable to be present at the ceremony. The High Commissioner mentions that'he is completely recovered, and is feeling better than he has for a long time. The Stratford Mounted Rifles have been going through drill to-day on King Edward's Park'.

An innuest was held yesterday, before Mr. C. D. .Sole, Acting-Coroner, and a jury of which Mr. W. J. Simpson was foreman, on the death of H. D. Liwson. The evidence went to show that decease'!, who was 37 years of age, was working on his cousin's sheep station at Mataonga. On.the morning of Tuesday a young fellow who was with him went out to look after the 'horses, leaving the deceased to gel breakfast. On his return he noticed three letters on the table, but did not see any signs of the deceased. On looking into the bedroom he saw.him. lying on the floor in a pool of blood. The young fellow got frightened, and went away lor help, meeting Detective Bodmin ere he had gone far. They returned, and found that the deceased was just exprin<_v He had shot himself through tlr forehead with a Winchester ride. I'm evidence went to show that the deceased had been very depressed lately, and also had an attack of religious mania. A verdict of "suicide whilst temporarily insane" was returned.

I hear that it is probable that one of the Ministers will attend the opening of the railway line to Te Wera. R. J. -Scott left for Palmerston this morning to engage in a wrestling match with Gordon Smith. I hear that a warrant has been issued for the arrest of a resident of this district on a charge of horse-stealing. Mr. J. Gyde, of Cardiff, has just undergone an operation at it private hospital in Auckland for eye troubles.
