The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's -winter meeting opened at Hastings to-day. The weather was fine during the first part of Che day, but late in the afternoon a bitterly cold wind was blowing, and the last two races were run in heavy showers. A sum of 1 £5035 passed through the totalizator, as compared with '£(>o4s for the first day of last year's meeting. There were thirteen bookmakers oil the ground (it £2O lQs each. Results-:

Hawke's Bay Steeplechase, about three miles.—Audax, U. 5, 1; Prospector, 9.11 (carried 10.1), 2. Won -by a .furlong, only the two finishing. Eurus and Sir Lethe unseated their riders. Jack Pot fell at the sod wall, and broke his neck. Time, 6min 42sec.
Whakatu Hack Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters. Golden Water, 9.5, 1; Millenial, 9.0, 2; Captain Jingle, 9.0, 3. Won bv a neck. Time, 3min 19 2-ssec.
Scurry Hack Handicap, six furlongs. — Gold Battery, '9.0, 1; Multiple, 10.13, 2; Ivildonian, 9.6, 3. Won by about two lengths. Time, lmin 17sec.
Heretannga Handicap, seven furlongs. —Hermia, 10.2, 1; Glissade, 9.3, 2; Idealism, 9.0, 3. Won by a length and a-haif. Time, lmin 31sec. Jerry O'Connell (rider of The Pebble) and H.
