A BARQUE IN TROUBLE.
The barque Solgan, bound from Port Esperance, Tasmania, to Lyttelton, with a cargo, of hardwood, sailed on Wednesday, 27th April, but had a very narrow escape from being wrecked at Derwent lighthouse the same evening. The barque went up to D'Entrecasteaux Channel, and was making for Storm Bay when she missed stays. Captain Halliday attempted to wear the vessel but failed. The barque was drifting towards the rocks, and would have struck in a few minutes, but the steamer Beemere, bound to Hobart, arrived on the scene at the critical moment, and towed the vessel into Storm Bay.
Contracts have already been signed for the building of three new liners for the new service between Britain and Australia to be inaugurated by Messrs A. Holt and Co. under the name of the Ocean Steam Ship Company (Ltd.) As far as can be ascertained, the number of vessels to be employed has not been definitely decided upon. Glasgow will be the port of departure from the Old World, and Sydney wil probably be the terminal port in Australia.
