TUItF TOPICS. (By ''Moturoa") Concluding day at Avondale. Big acceptances for to-day's Manawatu races. Followers of Jenkins did not strike a winner at Trentham. Gyrene was unlucky at Avondale on Saturday, but it will be "all serene" ■\'ery shortly. Sharpshooters have been busy at Palmerstoft lately. Will Sharpshooter do any good there to-day? The best hurdler seen out at Trentham was Gold Bird —the bird that lays the golden eggs. Truganini is in tip-top form now, and must win a race in the next few stains.

Parula ran a great race in the Suburban Handicap at Wellington, aud escapes a penalty in the Telegraph Stakes at Awapuni. The Soult? were in good form at Avoudftle, Manapouri gathering in the big handicap, and Antoinette and Pairajvjvtu scoring in minor events. Jockey Hector Gray won the last race on Wednesday at Wellington and the first at Avondale on Saturday. Quick work! And he piloted Antoinette to victory later oil m the noon. ,

Milan was ridden a confident race in the N.Z. St. Leger, and her party got a rude shock when Ingoda beat the favorite home from the distance in 3.2. There was no waiting on the journov either. Golden Loop was a bad investment each day at Irenthaip, the New Plymouth trained colt being well settled in both his races. The goldens are missing, and only the loop hangs out to snare the unwary punters. Not a single favorite stored at Trentham on Saturday, and the pencillers juust have 'had a goad. wm. The Sixth Maiuvwatu Stakes at puni has drawn a good crowd Ov sprinters', and promises to provide a close contest. If Forniby, Polymorphous and Penates line up, a slashing race will be certain.

The Wanganui horses, Si Bill, Voca, Overtime and John, were, railed to Palmerston on Monday, and before leaving home the quartette were doing good work, and are expected to run forward in their coming engagements. The Canterbury horseman, E. E. Jones, rode four winners at Trentham last week. Other successful hors'emen were: L. Traill, 3; A. McConnon, F. D. Jones, E. Murtagh, S. Reid and H. Gray, 1 each.

The 'principal winning owners were:— Sir Geo. Clifford, £750; Hon. J. D. Orniond, £525; G. D. Greenwood, £425; D. Rutherford, £325; and J. Monk, £175. Mr. C. E. Major's share of the spoil was £73. The following horses have incurred penalties for to-day's races at Awapuni: —Hurdles: Longner (101b), list. Karere Hack: Emblem (51b), lOst; Sail Las's (101b), Bst 81b. Taikorea Welter: Sharpshooter (51b), lOst 41b. Woodhey Hack: Emblem (51b), 9st lib. Waiata, after running third in the Oakleigh Handicap, came out and scored comfortably in the tetter-endowed Railway Handicap. The Tupuhi prad is a quick beginner, and will carry a lot of money in whatever races it starts in to-day. The horse has been accepted for in three events run over four, five and six furlongs respectively. The 'chaser Jack Pot IS getting through good work in view of the Wanganui Steeplechase meeting next month, and is expected to play a prominent part in the settlement of big "handicap stick events this season. With 9st 31b in the saddle Celtic ran a decent race in the Handicap Hurdles at Avondale on Saturday, just being beaten by a head for second money in a fairly fast run race. Celtic is a likely starter in the Maiden Hurdles to-dar.

Longner ran a good race each tftart at Trentliam, and looks like a, horse that is certain to pay his way over the small sticks later on. He should be much improved by his Wellington racing, and will most likely he slipped •again at Aw&puni.
