LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At yesterday's sitting of the General Synod "of the Church of England at Wellington a • committee was set up to consider the advisability of taking steps at once to constitute a new diocese to be called the ''Diocese oT Taranaki."
Mr. Newton King has received the following cable from his Sydney agent re hides:—"Market unchanged/' At the battalion parade of volunteers last night Lieut.-Colonel Okey presented prizes won in the Taranaki Guard's' shooting competition. Corporal Bruce took the Taunton Challenge Shield, Private W. F. Short a medal and Sergt. Evans a trophy. Yesterday is the 35th anniversary of the christening of the town of Inglewood, the ceremony consisting of the breaking of a bottl e of champagne on a pfno stump near the present schoolteacher's residence. The ceremony was performed by Mr. A. Standish, acting for th e Superintendent of the Province ("the kite Mr. F. Carrington). Some members of one of the local volunteer companies found time last night during tile ceremonial parade to hiss a couple of quarrelsome dogs. The "sooling" process was successful, and in the middle of the speech of the officer and guest whom the country and the battalion were honoring at that moment, a cKorus of yelps, snarls and growls was let, loose.
In reference to.Mr. Barton's suggestion to establish a meterological observatory on Mount Egmont, Mr. W. A. Colli,s informs lis that the North Egmont Mountain House Committee has had the matter under consideration for « few years past, and, further, that th i; committee has offered to undertake the management if the Government will provide tli c instruments, estimated to cost about £4O. But this expenditure has proved too great a hurdle for the department concerned.
An old man named James Rhodes was sentenced yesterday to a month's imprisonment for using indecent language in a public place. The Magistrate was not prepared to say in the morning whether the most objectionable word in the charge was indecent, the word being described by Webster as "a term of endearment amongst sailors," 'but, we fear, seldom useu with that meaning. By th e afternoon, the S.M. had arrived at the decision that this very common but none the less reprehensible mode of auurcss was indecent, and the old man, who has a "record," was sentenced to a month's incarceration.
Taranaki is famed for its luxuriant growth, its mountain, its butter-fat, and its history. Another ''wonder' must be added, according to the Hon. Carncross, M.L.C., who, in apologising last night to the volunteer battalion for appealing in mufti to receive his volunteer decorations, gave this province the credit for producing moths with prodigious appetites. He stated that whan he came from the South a few years ago lie had three volunteer uniforms. Having little use for them, lie stowed them away, not knowing then of the fearful ravages of the locally grown moth. When he opened up the parcel the other dnv he found the whole three suits riddled through and through, and quite unpresentable. He added that he had intended procuring another uniform, but Colonel Collins had advised him not to ffo so just yet, as in consequence of the re-modelling of the defence forces, the uniforms woukl shortly be changed. The driver of the New PlymouthOpunake motor 'bus, unlike the generality of 'bus drivers, will not allow any member of the fair sex, no matter how attractive or persuasive she may ue, to occupy the box scat on t'e ; l»us' immediately alongside him. The reason of this is not that he is by any rue.uis a misogynist, but that he is afraid some accident may happen through t'lei" excitability. The other day, whilst driving down the coast, a lady passenger made a sudden grab at iiis arm, and as' both hands are required to manage liis vehicle, particularly when passing other traffic on the road, he has been compelled to adopt the above sensible rule. Almost any old-time coach-driver can tell of narrow escapes from accidents through nervous ladv passengers making at grab at the reins' if anything a little out of the ordinary occurs, and it is just at such times that the driver himself requires to have complete control of affairs.

The caretaker of the North Eumont Mountain House (.Mr. T. 1!. Ryan) writes as follows:—We experienced very heavy rain on Wednesday night, the 19th instant, 5 inches falling from 11 p.m. on Wednesday to 0 a.m. on Thursday. The telephone will be completed bv the 22nd instant. Persons wishing to ring up the house from the gate can do so, as the Department has decided ■to install ail instrument at Mr. Williams', near the radius line gate. Throughout our extensive dairying and .pastoral district a very noticeable feature has been the manner hi Svh'e'i" cattle, have put on ltesh. ''Tiiev simply could not help it } everything has been in their favor," replied a well-known stock authority to the Hawera Star. To explain this circumstance it is only necessary to refer to the exceptionally favorable winter season that was experienced, which was followed bv conditions almost .similar hi the .springtime. At the Stratford Magistrate's Court, last week Arthur H. Richmond was charged by Hugh J. Richmond with having on the loth December at Beaconsfield Road assaulted him bv striking him with a whip. The Bene!) said that after having considered (the evidence they had come to the conclusion that a slight assault had been committed, but that sufficient evidence had not been adduced to warrant the defendant being bound over to keep the peace. .1. lie defendant would therefore be con.,i(;t?.i and discharged, each party to pay r.is own costs.
Opunake is full just now of the pedestrian exploits of a recent visitor. On recent Saturday afternoon lie walked from the town to the Rahotu mountainliouse, a distance of about twenty-three miles, next day vis'ited all the places and points worth seeing on the 11101111tan. returning in time to take the evening service at one of the churches without the slightest sign of fatigue. A few days afterwards the walking"enthusiast took the same route, walked round to the New Plymouth house, descended bv the road to the radius line, and then trudged on to New Plymouth.
Messrs. Webster Bros, sold no less than 2200 boxes of Xelson and Auckland fruit during the week just closed, and of this 1000 boxes were disposed of on Friday and Saturday last, the prices generally being in favor of 'lie public, who evidently look upon \V lister's fruit sale as one of the principal "orders of the day." The fruit mart has been fitted with electric light to permit of the whole of the fruit being inspected and picked over before being ■offered to the public. Of 570 boxes on Friday there wa S ' not one "wet" box, a fact which speaks eloquently for the quality of the fruit and the care with which it is handled and packed at the orchards. Sale,s are being held almost daily.
| The twelve-year-old son of Mr. ■! j McLoughiin had ,an unenviable experi- | cnce one evening recently (-ays tiie Gisborno Herald), and but for the timcI ly intervention of Mr. W. Howard might j liave fared badly. At the conclusion uf I a bicycle race the boy was returning to town, and when near Whatapuko bridge he was unexpectedly and savagely attacked by a medium-sized bull-dog. Mr. Howard, who was riding at the time, heard tiie boy's cries, ana on turning round saw the vicious animal make a second spring at the boy and seize him by the leg just above the knee, dragging him over. It then began biting at the calf of the lad's leg. Mr.' Howard was galloping to the boy's assistance, when his horse came down with him, and the dog, apparently frightened by the clatter, made off. Mr. Howard, who fortunately was not hurt, carried the boy home on his'horse, and medical aid was summoned. The lad was found to have some nasty teeth ■wounds about his leg, and was suffering from a. vevcre shock. MONSTER REDUCTION SALE BOX A Fill)? ./'.GAINS at TT-TK 'INK.
