M3£W ZEALAND UNIVERSITY SENATE. By Telegraph.—Press' Association. Dunedin, Last Night. At the University Senate to-day Dr. Fitcliett gave notice to move for a return showing the number of passes and failures at the matriculation examinations during the past ten years, with a view to a proposal to alter the standard. A reply was read from the Education Department to the Senate's renewed request for legislative authority to confer the degree of Bachelor of Literature. The Inspector-General of Schools wrote that there were now several degrees having currency in the dominion which were not recognised in other parts' of the Empire. The Minister for Education was unable to isarease the number of degrees, not having the legal force. The matter was referred to the committee.
The University Office suggested that a few questions regarding history and geography be incorporated in the matriculation examination. An English paper would get rid of the confusion caused by the '"extra question'' arrangement. The matter was referred to the committee.
It was reported that new examiners' from England were required for the following subjects: Mathematics, education, music, and the treatment of ores. Mr. James Allen suggested that there was no necessity to appoint an English examiner for mathematics, at any rate. The chairman remarked this involved the whole question of substituting New Zealand examiners' for English examiners, and the matter was not further discussed. Attention was drawn to the necessity for the appointment of the usual examiners in England. Professors J. It. lirawn and Salmond and Mr. Von Haast were appointed examiners for the Uowcn prize, and Mr. Hav, Rev. Cameron, and Dr. Fitchctt for the I-ludson prize. Mr. Allen gave notice to move oil Monday in the direction of substituting residents' of Xew Zealand for some of the examiners at present selected in Engl an d. The Rev. A. Cameron mentioned that it was a matter of which more was likely to be heard. He suggested that special investigation should be made into tlie work of the Recess Committee in relation to the matriculation examination. He said that if the committee had pursued the same course as last year 238 more would have passed at the examination.
