A large amount of general merchandise was brought from Wellington, including transhipments ex Karamea (from Liverpool)- Ruahine and Star of Canada (London), Nairnshire (West of England), Indragliiri (New York), Ula (Calcutta). Mr. S. Mclndoe, cliief officer of the Rarawa, is at present on holiday leave. Mr. McDonald, second officer, is actingfirst, Mr. A\ atson acting second, and Mr. Vincent acting-third officer. The advent of the new steamer Rnahine has had an important effect upon the New Zealand Shipping Company's steampr Jt'aparoa. Hitherto she was a mail and passenger steamer, but she now stands down, and on the company's official list of sailings shows as a cargocarrier.
The position of master of the fcrrv steamer Maori, which Captain T. M. Hunter has resigned to become pilot at Lyttelton, is said to carry a salary of £4l per month. The new*billet is worth about £3OO a year. The difference giv-'s one an idea of what the advantages r.f living ashore are valued at by those who follow the sea. There are few officers or masters who do not look forward to the time when they will '"'get a billet ashore."
The New Zealand Shipping CompanyV new liner Ruahine has an insulated cargo capacity for 7278 tons, and for cargo not insulated 50S1 tons, making a total carrying capacity of 12,359 tons. The steamer can also carry IS2B tons of bunker coal, while her water ballast tanks take 152S tons. Th e copper-dam dividing the holds from the propelling space is filled with water in case of fire, while patent fire-extinguishers are fitted throughout. A feature of the new vessel is the installation of fresh-water show<Ts for all classes. There is regular accommodation for 5G first saloon, SS second saloon, and 320 third-class passengers. The crew number 130.
