Prior to lite United Irish League's meeting at Nuwcastle West, County where, considerable ifrictiion exists between the rural and urban te-.imiU of the J3ar 1 uf Devon's estate over tli« impending sale, a body of men from Tommafullan, stating tiiat Mr. William O'Brien, M.P. disapproved of gathering, demolished the platform. 'Mr. T. .M. Kettle, M.l'., was thrown down, cut about the face, and kicked. •.Mr. iS, Ia Gwyime, another M.P., was also assaulted. The. police arrived and enabled the meeting to proceed. Mr. Kettle, in his speech, half doubted the fitness of the people for Home Rule. He wanted Home Rule to be a rule of reason and argument.
