COMMONWEALTH TARIFF.
Melbourne, November 7. The duty on apparel and attire of any description has been reduced to 40 per cent. The preferential duty is fixed at 45 per cent, (sic.)—a reduction of 5 per cent.
During the debate Mr. G. H. Reid urged the taking of a referendum on the fiscal question, but said it should not lie taken on the occasion of a general election.
HAY AND CHAFF DUTY. Perth, November 7. Exporter* evpress strong surprise at the action of the Federal Parliament in removing the duty on chaff and hay, which afforded protection to Commonwealth farmers against New Zealand competition.
