CANTERBURY A. AND P. SHOW.

Per Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The Canterbury A. and P. Metropolitan Show opened to-day in dull weather. The implements and machinery, New Zealand manufactures, and carriages were judged to-day, and the fencing competition was held in the afternoon. To-morrow the draught horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, dairy produce, and preserved meats will be judged, and the light horses, tradesmen's carts, and sheep dogs will be reserved for Friday. There was a small display of implements to-day, the exhibits totalling 107, as against 471 last year. Traction and oil engines are principally in evidence, but one of the most interesting features of the section are the milking-machines shown in operation. Large numbers of sheep were placed in the pens near the railway siding to-day, ready to be taken to the competition pens behind the pavilion. It is agreed that they display exceptionally good condition, and it is expected that the sheep will be well up to the standard. Cattle and horses will be taken on to the ground to-morrow in time to be judged. North [ Island breeders are practically unrepresented this year in any class of stock, and the display in this respect will depend almost entirely upon Canterbury. Lady Plunkot will visit the show on Friday (People's Day). ==
