PRESENTATION TO DR. LEATHAM.
A very pleasant function took place on Thursday evening in the Board room at the Hospital. At the invitation of Miss Browne, the matron, a few friends met Dr. and Mrs Lcathani, and were entertained at a musical evening. During the evening Mr Tiseh, Chairman of the Hospital Board, on behalf of the nursing staff, presented Dr. Lealham with a travelling rug, In making tinpresentation, Mr Tisch stated that in a few days Dr Lcathani would be leaving New Plymouth for a well earned holiday to the Old Country, the Board having granted liim leave until the end of the year, and appointed Dr. Walker his locum tennis. The matron and the nursing staff felt they could not allow the doctor to leave without expressing their thanks and appreciation of his many acts of kindness and the interest he had always taken in promoting their welfare. All the present, nurses had received their training under Dr. Leatimm and Miss Browne. Felicitous reference was made to Head Nurse O'Brien, and Misses llolford.Newinnd, Cunningham, and Smith, all of whom were trained here, and are holding high and honorable positions in the nursing profession. Speaking for himself, Mr Tisch said he would always retain the most grateful feelings towards Dr. Lcathani for the many acts of courtesy and kindness received during his term on the Hospital Board. On behalf of the matron and nurses he wished Dr. and Mrs Lcathani a pleasant trip and safe return to New Plymouth.
Dr. Leathani, in replying, said lie was quite taken by surprise, lie had no idea when be was asked to attend a social evening (hat lie would be the recipient of such a handsome present. He thanked them most sincerely, and also the chairman for his kind reference 10 Mrs Lealham and himself, and concluded by urging the nurses to de. vote as much time as possible to their studies.
Amongst those who contributed musical items were Mrs llawson (Mastcrlon), Miss Gray, and the Misses Leatlia.m, and Mr James Faull in his usual humorous style contributed a couple of items. Refreshments were handed round, and the singing of " Auld Lang Syne " brought a very pleasant evening to a close.
