Auckland, December 24 A collision wliicli resulted in the loss of five lives occurred in the harbor last night, when the coastal steamers Kapanui and Claymore, both belonging to tho Settlers Steamship Company ran into one another, the Kapanui sinking in five minutes, being nearly cut in two.

Every effort was made to save the passengers, but the following wero drowned Peter Carter (boy), Ebey (boy), F. Clark (carter), John Fletcher (Syrian hawker), Bernard Vipond (laborer).

Just before the collision took place the Kapanui's red light went out, and, in turning, the vessel obscured her green light. Immediately afterwards the crash came.

There was a scene of wild confusion on board the Kapanui, and die cries for help were heard by those on board the Claymore, Some of the passengers of tho sinking vessel 'jumped overboard, and were rescued. The only woman on board jumped into tho water with her husband, who had placed a lifebelt around her, He was a good swimmer and succeeded in supporting his wife until they were both rescued.
