"THE I*l HATES OF PENZANCE." | The spoiling performance, ot >Mr J. ('. Williamson's o|>era Company at the Theativ Hoynl on Thursday night attracted a large audience, and judging by the hearty applause which greeted every solo and chorus, there was no doubt that the reputation of the performers wus fully maintained, The I'lrates of Penzance" is aa opera which is so well known to playgoers that it needs no recommendation, yet it is ulways a pleasure to record such a thoroughly successful production as that which was given last night. The music throughout is peculiarly thut of Sullivan, a mingling of ull that is best in his sacred und secular compositions, consequently some of the effects ure remarkably accentuated, the trunsiHisition from grave to guy never clushing, but ulways revealing fresh charms. The piece was mounted iu that lavish mid complete style which characterises all Mr Williamson's productions. The chorus wnt exceptionally good and tuneful, while the dresses were marvels of tone and colour. Miss Dolly Castles was in splendid voice, und evoked treuientlovs npplause ut the conclusion »f all hi'r songs mid duets. Mr Howard Vernon was in his element as the Major-General his patter songs being rendered with great eflect. As the Pirate King, Mr Frank Wilson was very successful, and was abl.v supportcd by his lieutenant, Mr ltalston, and his subordinates. As Frederick, Mr Walter Whyle created a very good impression, and (earned considerable applause for his vocal numbers. Mr Ernest Fitts made an ideal Sergeant of Police, and with his bravo force was responsible for one of the best items in the piece. All the other members of the company acquitted themselves most creditably, special liaise being due to the orchestra. "THE MIKADO" will be staged to-night, and should {attract a vow«lctl house.
