RAILWAY TO THE MOUNTAIN
TURNING THE FIRST SOD. (Per Fress Association.) STRATFORD, Jan. 6. The first sod of the Mount Eguiont branch railway was turned at Wai puku to-day by Mr \V. T. JenBinge, M.H.R., iu the presence of about 200 persons. .Messrs C. E. Major and W. Symes, M.'sli.lt., wi.th the Majors of Stratford and liawera, and the chairmen of the Stratford County Council and Normanby Town ik>ur<V gave addiwses. A sum of £SOOO has been plated on the Estimates- for the work, ' which will cost about £50,000. The liny will run to stone deposits on the mountain, sufllcient to supply the whole of Taranaki, and will probably be used also for tourist txaflic and local excursions. A banquet was hcM after the ceremony, in Stratford.
