TIMARr, Jan. 2. The first) day of the Caledonian sports passed off successfully, although the attendance was reduced by a strong southerly gale keeping many ladies away. Nevertheless about 5000 were present. The S[>orts were of the usual character. The bicycle events were made intercsHing by the presence of Arnst Bros, and Randrup, and especially by the efforts of Randrup and R. Arnst, jnotor paced, to break W. Mortln's record of lmin 46sec for the mile with a flying start. Chalmers, of''Christchurch, with a 6i h.p. motor, did the pacing. Not much hope was felt of reaching the record on account of the strong gale blowing. Randrup covered the mile in lmin 49 2-ssec, and ArnA in lmin 48 2-ssec, much better time than was expected. The track was in fine order for a trial. J. Waldic (250 yds) won the principal bicycle race of one mile and a half j the scratch men, R. and J. Arnst and Randrup, failing to get up. Good entries were received for the running events, and a few for the feats of strength, jumping, and - Highland dancing.
