. (Per Press Association). , , AUCKLAND, August 6. Harrop, recently committed for trial on a number of charges of robbery and assault, hanged himself in Auckland gaol this morning. Harrop was a member of the Seventh Contingent. During the war a bul- t let entered his left hip and was ex- , tracted from the right. The doctors , then said madness might result. Deceased was aged 23, and was born in Timaru, but resided iji Auckland for about ten years with his parents. He apparently hanged himse.f overnight 'with a towel and handkerchief. Standing on a stool on his bed, he fastened the toweT round his neck, and jumped off, giviiifi himself a drop of about fifteen inches. He was rigid when found by a wander at breakfast time. He was of athletic build and cheerful, and his violent end was l not suspected. MASTEUTON, August 6. A man named Joseph 11. Rhodes was found dead in a hut at Manaia, two miles from here. A bottle which had contained laudanum was found near the bed, with the name of the chemist scratched off. Deceased left a note giving instructions as to hds burial and the disposal of certain moneys. A verdict of death by poison while in a mood of mental depreseion was returned.
