NEW METHODIST CHURCH.

CARRINGTON ROAD. The arrangements in connection with the above movement were advanced another stage last evening, when a very successful tea meeting and entertainment was held. The inclement weather made matters very uncomfortable, cspeciully on the return journey, for the large party which went out from town in one of Mr West's 'buses. Tea was servrd in the schoolroom, and the Jadios of the district had provided a most sumptuous repast. Those who had charge of the tables had a busy time, whilst local residents and visitors mingled together in a hearty social manner. After tea, an adjournment was made to the new church, which was filled for the after meeting. Mr R. W. Heal occupied the chair, and conducted the proceedirgs in a very efficient manuer. After devotional exercises, the chairman congratulated the residents cf the district on the erection of a building devoted to the purposes of Divine worship. The promoters of the movement deserved the best thanks of the residents for their zealous labours in carrying out the work to such a successful issue. Mr Wells made a statement as to the position of the building fund. The total cost of the building had been £167 16s, towards which £123 had beenrecived, the balance being provided by loan without interest by a friend resident in the district. The Rev J. N. Buttle expressed his pleasure at being present, and referred to the advantages derivable from the .erection of a building for distinctly religious purposes. The wouk undertaken in connection with an active church organisation should raise and elevate the spirit of life in a district like that of Oarrington-road. He mentioned the fact of the late Sir Harry Atkinson being a resident of the district, and eulogised the noble work he had done for the colony. That was an excellent example for the young people then present to follow. He urged the cultivation of the spirit of true religion as that which was best calculated to ensure strength of character and usefulness in life, Mr Garter also addressed the meeting, urging the necessity of maintaining the Sunday School in vigorous work. The advantages of this institution to the young and risiug generation was incalculable, and would have enduring beneficial effects. He moved a hearty vote of thanks to all who had contributed to the success cf the gathering, which was carried by acclamation An excellent musical programme was supplied. A good choir under Mr Rawlinson rendered several anthems in a manner which was highly appreciated, Miss Wilkie presiding at the organ. A quartette party also supplied two items, which were received I with loud applause. Songs were rendered by Miss Feltham (two) in a manner which created a most favourable impression. In the first she nar-1 rowly escaped the reward of an encore, I but in the second the audience would not be denied. Miss May Oannell gave " Queen of Angels " in her usual pleasing style. The accompaniments were played by Miss Wilkie (quartettes), Miss Oannell and Mrs Pikett. Apologies were made for the absence of the Rev W. Oannell and Mr J, Whitaker. The building (which has been erected by Mr A. Pikett of this town in a most satisfactory style) is a very creditable structure. It stands on a commanding site, a little neirer town than the district school, the dimensions being 26ft by 18ft, with porch Bft by 6ft. It : 1 lined throughout, and provides sitting a(J J omnio(latioi:i for 80 adults. The <"" te of their united efforls. , The opening service will be next Sunday, when the Rev J. N.' Buttle will preach in the afternoon, and Mr J. Asher in the evening,
