POLITICAL NOTES.
The Evening Post, Wellington, ling to the member for Hawera, is very severe. Referring to his speech on tha AdJress-in-Beply the Post 8 ys i—" In the a conder tbe coiner of commonplaces was more in evilenc?, although i" would naturally be unfair to judge the elect of Hawera by his first; venture in the Parliamentary arena. He lacked that pleasing nervous respect for tha majesty tf the High Oourt of Parliament that marked the delivery ra'her than the tubjvetraatterofhis pdocipil's speech. His preliminary " excursus " on Protection and international relations was academic rathtr than practical, and the spsaker made up by assurance for his l<ck of depth. ... He did not, metaphorically epeakiug, fall on his kn es iu adoration t f the Sdlon Administration, but, while generally praising it, was bold enough to admit chat mistakes had been made. Taken as a whole, his speech bore to the movdi's tbe relation a heavy Russian dinn r bears to the piquant zikonska which precedes it."
