DEBATING SOCIETY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—As a Debating Society isj about to be started in this towD, may I call attention to tha advantages such a Society offers to young man. It is generally looked upon as an opportunity to gain confidence in public speaking ; but that is by no means the only Bide, for to be able to speak sensibly and with confidence, one must be convoraant with the subjfcfc under discussion. This means a certain amount of reading, and as "we have the advantage nf a very fair public library, there shoald-be no difficulty in getting works ihat deal with most of the subjects that are lilsely to form matter for debate. To any yoong man (or old as well) who wishes to improve his knowledge of
subjects which are important to our political and aopial life, a Society cf this nature offers the chance. Our young nden are, as a role r fond enough of plysical exercise, bat there does not appear to be bo keen a desire for intellectual gymnastics. Tlie Debating Society will fill this wan* in a pleasing snd interesting manner. Trusting it will have a successful season, and thanking you in anticipation.—l am, etc., Debate.
