BRUTAL ASSAULT ON A CONSTABLE.
PJtB PRHBS ASSOOUTIOX | WgLtntams, March 31 Constable Irwin, who served in the Second Contingent in South Africa, and joined the police on his return, waa seriously injured on Saturday night, and is in the hospital in a critical oondition. He had arrested John Duffy on a oharge of disorderly conduct and conveyed him to the station in a hansom. On arrival here, Irwin ran into (he station crying "I'm done," and then fell on the floor, bleeding. Duffy was scoured and placed in a padded cell. Irwin st&trs chat Duffy became violent in the cab, beat hint severely, kicked him on the left side and in the abdomen, and forced his head through the window. Irwin's friends rrside at Hawera. Duffy was remanded for a week.
