Sir Joseph Ward, in opening the new Post Office at Feilding on Thursday, made complimentary reference to Mrs Hastie, who presented tha site. Mr James Gordon Stuart Grant, a well known Danedin figure, died on Iharsday morning.
Sir Joseph Ward addressed a large meeting at Patea on Wednesday night, dealing principally with financial matters. He had a hearty reception and received a vote of thanks and confidence in the Ministry. The retaileri section of the Otago Employers Association has adoptel the following list of holidays:—January Ist ?nd 2nd, February Races Oup day, from noon on Wednesdays, Goed Friday, Easter Monday, Anniversary Day March 23rd, Labour Day (October), King's Birthday, people's show day from noen, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Members will not subscribe to any bazaar, sports, picnics, or prize funds, nor advertise on programmes or ticket*.
A citizens committee has been appointed at Chrlstchurch to make arrangements for entertaining the officers of the fleet at a ball.
A man has been arrested at Chrfstchnrch on a charge of stealing a bicycle last September and another in January. In the divorce case Hall v. Hali in which a decree nisi was pronounced last week at Wellington, Judge Denniston has assessed the costs against the husband at £IOO, and on notice of appeal being given by the wife he ordered £50 a to be lodged as security for costs.
Tom Mann will address a meeting at Obristchurch to-night. The two lads who pleaded guilty last week to breaking into the premises of a draper, and stealing suits of cloths, aad also stealing horses, were dealt with at toe Supremo Oourt, Christchurch on Thursday, the Burnham escapee being sentenced to six months imprisonment, and the other lad admitted to 12 months probation.
Sir John Hall, who returned to the colony from England via tl)e East, arrived at Wellington on Thursday. Tenders are invited by the Railway Department for the right of keeping bookstalls at various stations, including New Plymouth, Stratford and Hawera.
Two deaths have occurred from plague at Shanghai. A great selebration of the occasion of tha centenary of Victor Hugo is proceeding in France.
Dr Robertson, writing to a local resident, states that the reason he has not again visited this neighborhood as anticipated is that his numerous engagement# have prevented him from so doing, besides the fact chat the Mokan has not yet been snagged. He proposed, however, to leave Sydney towards the end of the month for the purpose of going to Mokan. It is satisfactory to learn that the snagging operations are likely to be finiihed in a few weeks, and that the first of the new steamers for the Mokan coal trade will then be used. A secend steamer has been ordered, aid this may be followed by a third, Dr Robertson protests againttthe imposition by the Mokan Harbour Board of a dne of 6d per ton on coal, especially as the Board is doing no part of the snagging, a moiety of the cost is being defrayed by the syndicate.

The Okato School Committee has presented Mr Mcintosh, who gives np charge of the school this week, with a very handsomely illuminated and framed address, as a mark of tbeir esteem for him and in recognition of his past services.
