STRATFORD NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent). A good deal of uneasiness exists in the district at present with regard to the attitude of the Government towards several important public works. The wholesale dismissals of men en the East-road came as a most unpleasant shock. Then, too, there is the question of compensating the land-owners between here and Toko for land resumed for railway purposes. It is now eight months or bo since the land was taken, and the question of compensation seems as far from settlement as ever. In private business, such .a thing would not be tolerated. Then there has been the stoppage of work on tho mountain. Taking it altogether, it is not surprising that dissatisfaction is being freely expressed at the action, and inaction, of the Government. The Licensing Committee has now' had its quarterly meeting adjourned twice, owing to lack of a quorum. This is a most unsatisfactory state of; affairs for those who have business to j transact there. j I The Bank of New South Wales has 'acquired the old Go-operative Store si;e in Broadway. This is unquestionably one of the finest, if not the j fines', business site in Stratford, and I the Bank is to be commended for its foresight in securing it. A substantial building is to be erected on it without delay. Several business changes are pending here. Mr Thacker is retiring from his partnership with Mr Benjamin, and Mr Ellis, I understand, goes home to exploit his new egg-preserving process. J
