At the Court/to-day, amun named James MoAieoh was charged with having on October 22nd, at Wangaori, made a false declaration purporting to be a declaration of the value of good* imported by him into the eolony of New Zealand. The evidence was to tbe effect that on October Snd a panel, containing opal rings and brooches, came by port addressed to defendant, who called himself an opal merchant* T he invoice value of the goods wasXl7. The Customs Department being mm* pioious that the value was nnderstated, had the same valued, with tbt result that tbe cost price was found «.« be about £35. The goods were eaisHJ, and tbe man charged with attouptw* to defraud the Customs. A fins- of £IOO wnsimpesed.
