The Daily News. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 23,1901. THE EGMONT A. AND P. SHOW.
The annual show to be bold ia Hawerai on Wednesday and Thursday next by | the Egmont Agricultural and Peroral Association has long ceased to be looked 'upon as a purely local function. Next to Palmerston North, the Hawera Show is recognised ss the premier West Coast show, and, from an educational standpoint ranks ersond to none in the colony, This is owing very largely to the admirable way in which the show is conducted, and the way the exhibits are classified and arranged. The aim of the As?ociat ; on has ever been to make the show an object lesson for farmers, dairymen and others, so that the district will benefit materially and practically, The aim of the executive has not been so much to make a record in point of number of entries and attendance, as to secure the best class of exhibits, and get the show patronised by people willing to learn and profit by what is exhibited. In this sense, we believe it is safe to say the management of tbe A. and P. Society have carried out the high ideals which actuated the founders of the Association. Many of thee have passed away, but the lines laid down by them have proved to be thoroughly sound, and have resulted in enormous benefit to tho whole Provincial District of Taranaki. Tho show next week, which will be the eighteenth annual show hold by the society, promises to be quite-as successful as any of its predecessors, and quite as valuable in its rasults. The entries are good and varied, and, what is still more pkssing, come from a very wide area. The lists supplied by the secretary show that the entries to date are as follows : Sheep 185, cattle 125, horses 355, pigs 35 poultry 40, dogs 50, implements 250, cheese and butter 50, sundries 110; total, 12,000. If favoured with fine weather the attendance should be very large, as people are beginning to recognise that there is more in such fixtures than a mere holiday. Even tbose who have no direct interest in farming pursuits now realise that such exhibitions are an absolute necessity to the success of the industries of the colony, pastoral, agricultural and commercial, and their support in the shape' of gate money is invaluable to the society, and furnishes it with the means of providing the necessary accommodai ion for nun and- beas*. Much of the success of this show is due to the administrative ability of the capable secretary, who certainly leaves no stone unturned to further the objects of the Association, and is to be congratulated on the success so far .achieved.
