I In reference to a cible which recently appeared to the effect that the directors of the Oceanic Company were urging ! the Imperi.l Government, to abandou the Sum in favour of the San Francisco r ute f r mails to Australia, Messrs. Burn?, Philip and Co., the Australasian managing agents, explain to the Sydney Daily Telegraph that this refers to tbe New Zealand mails, which can be delivered at least five days earlier via San Francisco than via Suez.' It is understood that the British Post-master-General has been forwarding a considerable quantity of mail matter for New Zealand via Suez, which j during the year 1900 was delivered in Auckland on an average of a little over thirty-nine days, as against less than thirty-two days via San Francisco. During this year, however, the Oceania Company has placed larger and faster steamers on the route, which deliver the mails in about four to five days quicker time than formerly, so that the gain to New Zealand is further accentuated. The decision of tbe New Zealand Government to continue the subsidy on a poundage basis has probably caused the Oceanic directors to make representations to Great Britain. The National Dairy Association and the Manawatu A. and P. Assoeiation have jointly under consideration a proposal by the former to hold a dairying exhibition, and root and produce show at Falmerston North next winter, on the following lines—One section to be devoted to factory butter and cheese and dairying machinery; another to the root and general farm produce exhibition ; a third to be devoted to refreshments, in the hands of a live committee of ladies; musical programmes and various other attractions also to be provided. There are all the materials here for an exhibition that will attract and instruct and pay its way, if given good management. But the above is not all, for it is proposed to set Up a model dairy factory, equipped with the various makes of separators, freezing machines, and other improved appliances. The high educational value of this department would be increased if an arrangement could be arrived at whereby the Agricultural Department Bhoald use it as a dairy school and place of practical instruction for a few weeks after the show itself is over, A fat stock show and competition for the best repreaentaI tive display of products of the soil are suggested as additional attractions, and this winter sbow would also be tbe occasion of the National Dairy Association's annual meeting and conference. The two associations will shortly confer with a view to more detailed consideration of the project. No doubt were Dickens still alive
