STRANGE AFFAIR NEAR CHRISTCHURCH.
TOMAHAWKING AN INTRUDER. PBB PBESS ASSOCIATION. Christchuhoh, November 10. About 3 o'clock this morning a man named Queree, a contractor living at Opawa, about two miles from town, was wakened by his wife saying someone was endeavouring to enter the house by the bedroom window. Queree armed himself with a tomahawk, and with his son went round the house. They met a man who, Queree says, attempted to rush his son, and Queree thereupon hit bim on the head with the axe, and inflicted a severe 1 wound. A neighbour went for the police, and upon arrival they found that Queree had got the man a prisoner, and bound him with rope. The prisoner was bleeding profusely, and on being taken to tho hospital relapsed! into unconsciousness, and so far has! been unable to give any account ofi himself. He has been identified a j Henry Deighton, who lived not far off from Quereti'g, and it is quite possible he may have mistaken the house. It is probable Queree may be arrested.
