THE HATCHMENTS FOR ST. MARY'S
j THE COLOUIIS TO BE UNVEILED. i We are indebted to the Yen. ArchI deacon Walsh for the following brief description of the hatchments which \ are to be unveiled at St. Miry's on Sunday, 3rd November : j The present instalment of hatchments includes those of XIV., XL., t LVII., and LVIII. Regiments. They , are uniform in s'V) and general appear- ■ aqce with the others, being painted in | oil on panels two fee 1 ; squire, placed diamond-wise, and surrounded by a [ polished black moulding, with an inner 'gold band. The treatment, however, is eomewbat different. As in the former cases the general design con- , s ; s f s of a representation of the King's j and regimental colours, crossed and surmounted by the Royal Crown and the regimental numher, with the name ( oa a scroll below. But inste td of being draped, as before, the flags are now j fully displayed. This has been dono so as to avoid hiding any of the |" honours," which in all the four ara more than usually numerous. But any sacrifice nf pictorial effect is more | than compensated for by the be terview of the elaborate and beautiful designs. There is also an important difference in the material. The first two were painted on kauri; the next lot of four on Californian redwood; but for the present ones "compo board" has be n used. This is a made of compressed wood pulp, which is fire and insect proof an'i damp-resistant, and therefore pa»fectly durable. It is j finished with a fiao-graioed surface, and is eminently fkted fo,c the present purpose. The charge of notorial, howevec, maljs no difference in the
of the work, which is uniform throughout. The fallowing descrip'jon will give an idea of the designs ; XIV.
