CLIFTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Clifton Council met on Friday. Present: Messrs Piggott (chairman), Webb, Hicks, Elliot, Murley, Oliver, and Foreman. i Thomas Waters applied for a slaughtering liceose on section 4 block 4, Tongaporutu, but it appeared there was r.o necessity for the license. The Stock Inspector notified he had given the o.vner of sections 30 and 53, W*itara survey district (Kaipiki-road), j mtice to remove of noxious weeds, I A discussion ensued as to the time in [ which the work should be done, and after referring to the Act, and it appearing that no time was fixed for completing the work, it was decided to urge the Inspector to have the weeds removed speedily. The Commissioner of Crown Lands forwarded fchedule of accumulated thirds amounting to £IOB2 Os 4d, and requested proposila for expenditure to be submitted for approval of the Land Board. He also stated that it was advisable not to allow same thirds to ro- [ main unexpended, especially when the roads needed repair. Mr Foreman urged that the allocation of these thirds should be systematically curied out, so as to ensure expeditious and advantageous work on roads. Mr Webb wis in favour of the engineer reporting on the list and with the BssHfarjce of the members framing proposals. Booth, MacJonsld aod Co. submitted a circular re a road-making machine. The Taranaki Council notified that it did not approve of the Tikorangi bridge being vested in that Council. The Depart mcnt of Health forwarded pamphlets relating to dealing with outbreaks of typhoid fever. The Lands Department notified it could not set apart a portion of the Fore3t Re3erve, near Purangi, for a gravel reserve, but was prepared to permit removal of gravel on payment of a royalty of 3d per cubic yard under conditions stated—a spscial license being required for each contractor. The engineers stated that a license had come to band. The Chairman advocated that efforts be mide to get a remission of the royally. Mr. Foremm considered correspondence on the question would be useless. The only plan was ta take an opportunity of interviewing the Minister. The Treasury notified that £6OO had been remitted on account of loan o > ihe Okoke road, .£l2O 7s 2d on the O'araoa-road and £59 16s Bion same road.
The Department of Roads forwarded Gazette notice in respect of deviation and closing roads on the Junation-road at Tarata.
The Ungint>ers submitted estimates for metalling O'toke-road and formation of North-mad. They also reported on the propoied deviation of the Junc-tion-Puiangi-rjad through Mr. Wells' so as to avoid the wet portion of the road and save about 7£ chains in length. They further reported having surveyed the deviation of the North-road (Pukearuha) through Messrs. Riddell, Baker, and McMihoa'ci I rod and native section 54. Tracings had bean forwarded for the consent of the parties interested A discussion took placa oa the proposed deviation through Mr. Webb's land abou l ; seres of which would he required for the purpose. Eventually it was decided that the chairman ascertain the proposed cost and whether Mr. Campbell would in exchange for the old road b} prepared to compensate Mr. Webb for the land taken from him, the ehiirman to have full power to authorise the deviation it, aftir the inquiries mentioned, ha thought fii to do so.
Eight tandems we'e opened for metals ling on the Okoke-road; that of H. George at £3 2s 6d per chain was accepted.
Tenders; were received from T. 0. Waite £234 17s lid, and S. T. Cooper .£257 18s lid for forming Pukearuhe-road. That of Mr Waite was accepted conditionally on Mr Riddel's formal sanction to the deviation.
Mr Southey Baker waited on the Council expressing h : s willingness to charge his own land for the continuation of the road. He s'atod that under the new Local Bodies Bill power was given to borrow £SOO on the i security of any particular person's I property. Only within the hst few days the Educition Board had asked for a site for a Bchool on the hill. The matter was left over until the new Act was before tho Council, it being under- j 1 stood that Mr Bak r might pro3eed ] with fencing off hi* -property on the j lines of the new road as surveyed. A number of settlers of Mimi and 'Uru>i wrote asking that the Council would tike the necessary steps to raise a loin of £ISOO for metalling the unmetalled portions of the main Northroad to TJruti and a portion of the U- uti-'oad beyond the bridge as far as the rating area would permit. Mr Murley strongly advoc ited compliance with the pat.itioo. He statsd what had transpired at the meeting of settlers when it was decided to ask for the loan. He urged the necessity of getting a Government subsidy plac*d on the Estimates. He moved that the petition be complied with. After a lengthy discussion the motion was carried. Applications for the position of surfacemen vera received and tbe following appo'ntments were made: For Mokau R'ding T. Sullivan, and for Tikorangi Riding W. Nichollc. The engineers drew the attention of 'he Council t) the of the Onsero bridge, which required rebuilding. They recommended concrete pin's instead of piles. They were authorised to test the bed of the rivqr as to foundations for cqncrete and to §ub|mit an estimate for a new bridge, Mr. R, Burk* waited on the Council with a request for help in putting the track on t l e old Okoke-road in order. The Chairman explained that ir, was ■ [ unlikely the Council would spend money 1 on the track in ques'ion. Mr. Burks also asked that the accrued thirds on his and the adj jining ' sections might be spent in repairs to 1 the bad parts in the road. Mr. Georgo On 1 waited on the Council to request that help be given to clear out the watertables and culverts, and do other repairs on the Manga-whero-road. The ma'ter is to be attended to. A deputation of settlers on the Inland North-road waited on the Council. The Council then considered the proponed by-laws in respect to the width of wheel tyres on drays and waggons, the s'ze being regulated by the number of hoi-sea req'iitvd for hau'iga.
