THE ACTING PRESIDENT.
COLONEL THEODORE ROOSEVELDT. Colonel Theodore Rooseveldt was born in New York in 1858. Educated at Harvard; he began his political career in the New York Legislature in 1882, and speedily took a prominent position there, becoming leader o£ the House in 1884. He was a Civil Service Commissioner, U.SA,, 1889-95, President o[ the New York Police Bos-d 1885-7, and was then appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy. When the war with Spain broke out he raised a corps of Rough Riders and took them to Cuba, where they did splendid service. He has told the story himself in his book " The Rougli Eiders," 1899, and is the author of many other successful books. He was made Governor of New York State in 1898, and was the life and soul of the Republican light for the Presidency in 1900, being himself nominated, against his wish, for the Vice-Presidency, and triumphantly elected. He is a. great popular favourite, and one of the strongest and most straightforward men in American political life. lllll ill IMB
