AUCKLAND DEFEAT WELLINGTON. | Wellington, September 14. Auckland gained a well-deserved victory over Wellington in the presence of an attendance of between 4000 and 5000, including the Governor. The crowd took a keen interest in the ! proceedings, and liberally applauded i the visitors. Wellington had the luck to win the toss, and gained the advantage of a stro"g wind, but made little ! use of it; in fact they were outplayed from the jump, and the Auckland forwards smothered them time and again. The first score fell to Auckland, but 'this, it turned out, was a mistake, the ball being kicked oven the line to Slattery, who grounded it and let go when Rod McGregor fell upon it, and the referee was unable to see what actually occurred and awarded a try. Shortly after, Wellington put on a spurt, and after Bom's free passing S'attery's strength enabled him to hurl himself over the line, making three all. In the second spell Wellington, against the wind, played much bet'er, and so good were the forwards for a time that they flatterad the specta f ors into a belief that they would win. In the last quarter of an hour, however, the team went to pieces, and Buckland scored two fine trie?. The second was i the result of some very bid play among the Wellington backs, who could easily have kicked the ball out of touch. No goals were kicked, and the score when the bell went was Auckland 9, Wellington 3. Bo'h the full tack*, and Asher and Backland on the Auckland side, played a fine game. Auckland, September 15. Auckland defeated Ohinemuri by 9 to 6.
