In the Ricardo ens'", Captain Dodds, in tis evidence, said that at Vet River 1 R-cardo remained under cover with a detachment of Queenslanders while Captain Reid and the New Zeal-meters captured a maxim. When urged by his brother officers to advance Ricarno slid the New Zealanders could lose their men if they liked; he was going to take his back to Queensland. Three members of the Contingent gave evi'dence to seeing Ricardo get stuck at a fence, while a detachment wss taking cover from the enemy's fire; Ricarno shoutod to be taken out or he would be shot. A deputation of the Parliamentary Labour Party asked the Premier to assist the inter-State protest to the Federal Gnvnrnment against the employment of Lascars on subsidised mail steamers, and urged the unfitness of Loscars in time of danger. The inconsistency of the Federal Government in suppressing Kanaka labour ashore and permitting LttFcir* on mail bonts was pointed out. Mr. See siid the deputation bad his fullest sympathy. Melbournk, Ausust 20 The public subscribed a little over £20,000 of the .£IOO,OOO 3 per cent. Government guaranteed debentures on account ff the Commissioners of the Savings Bank, to be used for advances to farmers. The balance will be allotted to the Commifsioners at a minimum of -696. The whole loan averaged J96 0s ll£d.
