Mijor Steward prasidtd, and the:e was a la rye attendance. A considerable sum was raised in the room, and it was intimated the Cabinet would give a joint donation to the fund. A committee was appointed, with i power to add to its numbers, to carry . out the nectssaiy arrangemeEts to 6uit-' ably ommemor.ite the memory of the late Sir John McKenzie by a memorial or otherwise. Major Steward was elected permanent chairman ef the: committee, Hoi:. Lee-Smith treasurer, 1 and Hon. Rigg secretary. A proposal made by Hon. La '-Smith that thej j memorial should take the form of a j cairn to be erected on the top of Puketapu hill, ne tr Heathfie'd, was generally approved. It was also suggested • that a bust of Sir John McKenzie ' should be placed in the Parliamentary ; ■ lobby. It was decided that prominent, ■ public men in other parts of the colony ba approached with a view of their names being added to the commi'tee, so that the memorial should be a national and not a Parliamentary ore.
