RIFLE SHOOTING.
TRYING THE NEW RIFLES, ' [by marksman]. Some of the shooting team of the Taranaki Eifles had a practice with Hie new Lee-Eafield rifles at the Fraukleyroad rangs yesterday. The weather was fine, but rather cold. Some very good shontmg was done, especially at the 600 yanh' ran,'*. Oap f ain Okay compiled 45 at the 500 yards, ard 44 at the 600 yards. Linoe-Oorporal Armitage made 43, and Sergeant Lister and Corporal Smith 42 each at 600 yards, no sighting sbo-.s /being used. Generally speaking, there ii very little difference between t'.ie pressot rifles and the Martioi-Enfield, Iho barrel being the same. The foresight of the Lee-BJdfield is better; but on the other hand, the acMon of the cocking piece is somewhat disconcerting at I first to one 1 us»d to the Martioi action, I the striking mechanism of which was covered in.
A pair of orthoptics—the Iris) were in evidence on the range, but, were not used in shooting; the mirksman contenting themselves with looking at the target through them. They seam to fulfil all that is claimed for them, One or two of the more curious fired from the magazine of the rid", which •worked rather stiffly at first, but proved very satisfactory after a little use.
