THE LARGEST BAROMETER IN THE WORLD.
The largest barometer in the world ever yet made lias now been erected in the Tower of St. Jacques, in Paris. It is 12.65 metres high, was manufactured in St. Denis, and with all care conveyed in a strong wooden frame by six workmen to Paiis. In the tower, the interior of which is 40 metres high, this valuable instrument had to be drawn up with ropes. The diameter of the barometer tubes is two eentim.; it can be easily imagined how difficult it was to construct such a tube of perfectly equal proportions. The baromet9r is intended for special experiments, and is of course not filled with quicksilver, i but with colored water, which is j separated from the air at the top by a thick layer of oil, so as to prevent evaporation. Similar large barometers ] were already constructed in a similar I way in 1830 by Daniell in London, in I 1870 by Jordan in Kieuw, and in 1886 ] by Mills in New York; the two latter, howevei', with a filling of glycerine. All these three were, in size, considerably behind the latest of all gigantic barometers.
