(By Veteran.)
Th« Taranaki Rifles held their usual inspection parade last night, under Lieuts. Cock and Hooker, Sergt. Percock also being precent- There was a g'od mußter. At tha conclusion it was unanimously resolved that a presentation be made to Lieut. Cork in recognition of his long and valuable gwvices. Lient. Cock leaves for Melbourne to-morrow in his privite Capacity, the Goxernment having refused permission to allow him to go with the Federal Contingent. Is would seem that character, intelligesce, *bifi»y, length o c s°r»ic», e'e, count for nothing in thi-s federal Contingent business, if one is not six feet high he has oo chance. If five feet four is tall enough for a volunteer, it should be tall enough for a chance in any privileges a volunteer may get. I believe that one man selected is a recruit from a new corps end hasi <« y wen about two months servic?. No no'ification has been sent to the local officers as to who has bef-n chosen.. Sergt. Lever has won the gold medal. A circular as to how many volunteers could attend Wellington for a week on the occasion of the Dukj of York's visit was re>d at a meeting of tK» ' arautki Rifles 1 r« night, there was no restriction as to height mentioned.
