Th« Taranaki Rifles held their usual inspection parade last night, under Lieuts. Cock and Hooker, Sergt. Percock also being precent- There was a g'od mußter. At tha conclusion it was unanimously resolved that a presentation be made to Lieut. Cork in recognition of his long and valuable gwvices. Lient. Cock leaves for Melbourne to-morrow in his privite Capacity, the Goxernment having refused permission to allow him to go with the Federal Contingent. Is would seem that character, intelligesce, *bifi»y, length o c s°r»ic», e'e, count for nothing in thi-s federal Contingent business, if one is not six feet high he has oo chance. If five feet four is tall enough for a volunteer, it should be tall enough for a chance in any privileges a volunteer may get. Lever has won the gold medal. The competition for tho boot l presented by the Northern Boot and Shoe Cou\tnny, will take place od Thursday, Afsy 2nd. Handicaps will appear shortly.
