For some unknown reason, probably becanse it was an unusually dark wet night, tho lamps in the back streets were put out at 9 o'clock last night while the Deronstrcet lamps were burning brightly after midnight. Queen Alexandra has arrived at Cepenhagin. The drill shed at Auckland was burned down at five o'clock on Monday morning. A private wire has reached Duaedin stating the yacht Ariadne, travelling round the world is a'hore on the beach south of Waitaki River. All is well The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board hold a special meeting to-day. The Gairloch is expected to leave Oneearly to-day with the inward 'Frisco I mail. A British syndicate ha* acquired eighty million tons of iren deposits in Norway. The serenity of Mr. Smith's meeting last night was somewhat disturbed when Sir. Courtney suddenly, after some very friendly remarks, fired off a bembehell at the Government, the grievance being slicing off portions of a corner section of land sold that day. Mr. Smith was on the warpath at once and the audience seemed quite satisfied and much amused at his reply. The action of the Jockey Club in bringing a Wa'iganui architect here in connection with the proposed improvements to the stand, etc., \a certainly open to question. The local architects are certainly capable of advising t he club on matters of this sort.
