The Age stated while the Talune was here Mr Fletcher, tbe chief steward, stated that oa the trip to Sydney Mrs Smith in conversation with him related a strange story setting forth her reasons for visiting Sydney, She said that some years ago she was instrumental in saving the life of a child named Smart To mark their gratitude the parents ef the child insured its life in her favour for £SOO. Latterly sho heard by letter that the child was ;.dying of consumption, and sua was proceeding to Sydney to claim the money from tha Insurance Company, Received 15, 4.33 p.m. Sybaey, March 15. The Conway inquesS was resumed. Mr. Fletcher, chief steward of the Talune, deposed that Mrs. Smith joined the Talune at Lyttelten. Btfore leaving Wellington she came to him and slid she was thort of saloon passage money to Sydney by a few pounds, and asked if she could have a saloon passage by giviDg security over her luggage. Th ; s was agreed to. She mentioned she had a draft for £SO, which by mistake, had been forwarded to Sydney. On the nightof FeSruary 19tb, witness saw Mrs. Smith going forward about a quarter past seven. She was carrying something coveied with a napkin. It appeared to be a plate with a glass on i». She said she was taking something for a friend. Witness then described tbe death of Conway, and from eurtain Jrt marks made by fpsssengors he rej eeived the captain's instructions to go and see the Udy passenger. He went and saw Mrs. Smith and ssked her if she knew Conway. She replied she had known him s'ightly. Witness said to her he had b-en told Conway's wife was aboard. She replied she did not know he was married. Witness then went back, and on the captain's instructions saw M'S. Smith again. B'ford Conway died he asked her if she knew anything about his people, and she replied she knew his sister who lived at lioslyn, Dunedin. Next day witnt-si had another conversation wish Mrs. Smith, who said at one time she had g'veo Conway her garden to do up, as i.e had beeo out of work and n;t well off.
