WAITARA NOTES
(From our own Correspondent.) The WaUara Town Board held its usual monthly meeting on Monday evening. Present: Messrs. Ogle (Chairman), Chappell, Fraser, Hignett Knight, and Riddel). The latest communication from tbo Valuation Department was to the effect that payment of the charge might bo hold over until the district valuor was able to arrange matters with the Board. The Chairman reported that Mr. Hill had aareed that £5 5s was a reasonable amount to pay, but the question had not y«t been defiaitely settled. , Seeing that the original amount charged was £io 16s 9el, which was reduced on a protest to £l2 10s, which latter amount has practically again baen reduced on a further protest to £5 ss, the situation looks a little more healthy, But what an extraordinary method there must be of compiling accounts in the Valuation Department!
On bohtxlf of the Works Committee, reported that Messrs. Tapson and McKoy had removed 678| yards of earth in OiAcroft-atreet at contract price ; that Mr. Johnston had commenced the ploughing on High-street and would also proceed with certain formations near Mr. Bell's residence, and on Cracrof.-street; also that Mr. Gilbert had been instructed to paint all the )amp-piists. A communciation was receivod from thn Defence Department! agreeing to pay the gam of .£lO as a! fioal pa\u'iwi; for keeping the soldiers' cemetery in repair. Other matters dealt with consisted of the ereo'ioa of an additional lamp at the corner of High and Oracroft-straut, the ua.luthorisod • removal of earth from Leslie-i?treßt, and the dangerous practice of burning gorse ia the public st-ests.
Accounts amounting to £59 wajs passed and tba Board rose.
