SUPREME COURT.
(PBB PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Nelson, March 6. At the Supreme Court, D<\ Laggatt was charged with performing an illegal operation, and was found "Not Guilty." Auckland, Match 6. A middle-aged man named William Fahey pleaded " Not Guilty" to a charge of attempt to commit a rape, at Farnoll, in January, 1900, on a girl named Jane Hew, agud 18 years. The. Crown Presecutor, in opening the case, said ;he girl retired to bed on the night in question and was awakened by what she took to be a cat in the room. She felt somebody take hold of her hand, and immediately afterwards felt a handkerchief, saturated with chloroform, pressed over her mouth. On regaining her senses she found the prisoner in bed with her, and on his leaving, she immediately gave aa alarm. Prisoner was found guilty, and sentenced to ten yearf>' imprisonment.
